Lake Needwood Fishing

The Montgomery County Park system undertook major renovations in 2011 that included dredging the lake to increase the depth and improve boating, fishing and water quality. The concession area rents boats and the park system allows anglers to launch private boats from the concrete ramp with a permit. Electric motors only.

The hilly, 1,800 acre Rock Creek Regional Park surrounding Lake Needwood is fully developed with a comprehensive range of activities to include a nature center, archery range and golf course that make it a destination for much more than fishing.

The entire shoreline of this large lake is accessible. There are numerous access points with parking lots on the east side of the lake.

The west side is accessible from the Westside Hiker-Biker Trail that starts near the concession area and ends at the parking lot near Needwood Road. There are also numerous hiker only trails providing additional access to the eastern shoreline.

In addition to the trout the DNR stocks in the spring, the lake has largemouth bass, catfish and crappie with 40 inch tiger muskies being hauled out periodically.

Directions:

From I-270, take exit 9 to merge onto I-370E toward Metro Station. Exit at Shady Grove Road toward MD 355S/Rockville. Turn left onto Shady Grove Road. Turn right on Crabbs Branch Way. Turn left on Redland Road. Turn right on Needwood Road. Turn right on Beach Road.

All the details are in my book, but I felt like I needed to put up a posting about something in the Blue Ridge as the water begins to heat up in late February. If you’re going to fish the Rapidan, the area above Camp Hoover is essentially a waste of time.
