The February Bassmaster magazine had a great article on the line selection – very educational. The author, Frank Sergeant, summed up the problem with his introductory line, “It used to be a simple question – Trilene or Stren?”
To bottom line the discussion, there are four major types of line on the market today; monofilament, fluorocarbon, braid and co-polymer. Each has advantages and challenges that you should consider as you get ready to complete your Spring re-spooling of all of your reels.
Monofilament
- Less Durable
- Stretches
- Brittle with Age
- Good Knot Strength
- Cheap
- Castable
Fluorocarbon
- Invisible
- Sinks
- Wear Resistant
- Lasts Longer
- Stiff, Not As Castable
- Some Not Slippage
Braid
- Very Strong
- Small Diameter
- No Stretch
- Floats
- Good for Heavy Cover
- Expensive
- Long Life
- Highly Visible
Copolymer
- Multiple Fluorocarbon Type Resins
- Abrasion Resistant
- Low Stretch
- Good Knot Strength
- Low Memor
Your personal fishing style should dictate your selection. My personal preference is to always fish with at least 2 rods. I rig one with braid and the other with Mono. I’m not good enough to worry about the nuances… But maybe that’s what’s keeping me from catching more fish!
