Ordered one of these DownEast rod holder from Amazon to use to hold my rod or even to use to drag a worm or drop shot rig while fishing with the other rod. 

These things worked out pretty good.  They were easy to clamp and have plenty of adjustments.  You can pivot them by using the wingnut on the clamp.  In addition, you can adjust the angle of the rod by repositioning the rod holder.  You lift up on it and can reinsert it into the holder at a number of different angles.

While I have not had to do a panic grab for this thing yet based on catching an actual fish, the rod release is very quick.  All you do is pick it up and the holder will release it.
