Trout/Bass – Hone Quarry Lake (VA)

You won’t need a high clearance vehicle to reach Hone Quarry lake. The asphalt road leads all the way up to the campground and then turns into a smooth and well maintained gravel road for the remainder of the trip.

The final pitch up the hill is steep as you you grind past a high, red dirt bank on the right. Continue past the first turnoff at the head of the lake and go down the hill. The unimproved boat launch is on the left of a small and well maintained lake that is part of the stocked trout program.

During the stocking season, it would be a good place to drop a pontoon or a canoe into the water. Since the lake is small, it would be easy the entire body of water in a short period of time. The far bank is closed off by a steep hillside and the remainder of the shoreline is accessible – although it does turn marshy at the northern end of the lake.

If you continue to follow the road farther into the national forest, it gets rougher and rougher and absolutely requires a high clearance vehicle. You can follow the road to where the input stream crosses and confirm for yourself that the stream is not fishable. In the summer, the stream dries up and all you can see is the barren streambed.

Bottom Line: I’m sure this is a good place to go during stocking season when the lake is loaded up with trout. The good access from three sides makes this easy enough fish from the bank although a pontoon boat, small kayak or canoe that you could quickly throw into the lake would be ideal.
