Todd Lake (VA)

Articles on this site are out of date since some go back to 2006. Regulations and property ownership may have changed since publication. It is your responsibility to know and obey all regulations and not trespass on private property.

I continued south after checking out Hearthstone Lake with my next stop being Todd Lake.

Here’s the quick bad news. There are neither bass nor trout in this lake. According to Hart, it has a vibrant population of pike. It is a small lake – only 5 acres.

The lake is in one of the formally designated state recreation areas and it costs $16 a day to use it. I drove over to check it out and was stopped in my tracks by sign that indicated that even if you are just coming to take a look you had to pay the fee. $16 to catch pike or take a look? Forget it. This is probably a good place if you’re going to camp since it does have restrooms, hot showers and drinking water available.

I retreated to the crest of the hill and snapped the picture below so you can gain an appreciation of what the lake looks like. Later, when I looked at this on Google to get the directions and show the satellite picture, I was stunned to see that on the last satellite pass the entire lake was dry. Therefore, even if you’re going to fish for pike, you may not find any.

Bottom Line: If you want to fish for pike come here. I don’t so I didn’t.

Getting There: From I-81, take Exit 245 onto Port Republic Road (VA 253).  Continue onto Maryland Ave.  Turn left at VA 42 (S High St).  Turn right at Mason St.  Continue onto VA 257 (Ottobine Road).  Turn left on VA 257 (Briery Branch Rd).  Turn left on VA 613 (Spring Creek Rd).  Turn right at a fork onto VA 727 (Sangersville Rd).  Turn left on VA 730 (N. River Rd). Turn right on VA 718 (Stokesville Rd).  Left on FR 95.  Follow FR 95 to the reacreation area.  Leading Edge Road joins FR 95 and takes you into the actual recreation area.

Remember to refer to my rating explanations – these are based on what I look for – so RED for Physical Fitness translates to easy physically – you do not need to be in shape to fish this section.  I prefer terrain that is tough to get into and out of.

Secrets Revealed?  No.  This is a very public location that is documented in the following places:
