Bass/Trout – Lake Habeeb (Rocky Gap Park – MD)

Articles on this site are out of date since some go back to 2006. Regulations and property ownership may have changed since publication. It is your responsibility to know and obey all regulations and not trespass on private property.

Sitting in the shadow of Evitts Mountain and fully enclosed within Rocky Gap State Park, Lake Habeeb is a massive body of water fed by Rocky Gap Run. As you would expect on a lake this size, it features a public boat ramp at the north end (39.711759,-78.641784) but, surprisingly, only allows electric motors.

If you do not have your own boat, you can rent boats, canoes or kayaks at either the day use beach area or at the campground beach.

In addition to trout stocked during the season, anglers can catch catfish and bass. Shoreline anglers should find the 4.5 mile Lakeside Loop Trail encircling the lake their ticket to fishing without a boat. In fact, as it runs along the west side of the lake, it offers up a remote experience. For those not interested in walking, the park management strategically placed fishing docks near the campsites and at the dam.

As a modern park, fishing is not the only thing to do. Hiking, golf, nature activities, swimming and a host of other diversions await your visit with the opportunity to stay in either a primitive campsite or a world-class lodge.

Getting There: From I-68, take exit 50 toward Rocky Gap Street. Turn right onto Pleasant Valley Road NE. The road parallels the eastern side of the lake. Turn left to pick a parking lot. If you have a boat, go to the northern access point to use the boat launch. There is another launch directly across the lake off of Campers Hill Drive.
